Mission Summit Foundation was founded in 2011 when a group of 9 friends decided to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Just before the ascent Niels van Buren was diagnosed with MS. This did not prevent him from participating. He decided to take on the fight with his illness. The group of friends decided to link the climb of Kilimanjaro to a charity. This was, of course, MS. A foundation was created with the name Mission Summit. By organizing various events such as a benefit concert by The Hint Big Band, a Gala in Holland Casino and a Masterclass at Nyenrode University, money was raised. Through this Mission Summit has raised over 35,000 euros for research on MS.
Mission Summit is now going one step further. Niels van Buren has the ambition to be the first Dutchman with MS to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 2016. Many MS patients have to climb the proverbial mountain every day to be able to participate in daily life. By climbing Mount Everest Niels wants to show that he did not sit down in despair and that life after having been diagnosed with MS still has plenty to offer.
Climbing Mount Everest is a huge challenge that can only be done via a long-term plan and with the help of friends. A plan with ever higher goals, until there is no higher goal left.
Meanwhile, Niels has succeeded in reaching the summit of Mount Everest. Niels van Buren is the first man with MS in the world who has stood on top of the highest mountain in the world. A unique achievement with which Niels wants to show what is possible when you believe in your dreams and he also wants to gain attention for the incurable disease that MS still is.
