Mission Summit: Reaching the summit for MS Research
1 idea, 2 goals, 10 friends, 50.000 euros. That is what MissionSummit stands for.
Mission Summit started as an item on a bucket-list (Nynke’s). Reaching the highest point of the highest mountain in Africa was a must do before turning 40. An invitation post on facebook and soon after eleven friends who met in 2008 through a different challenge, Nyenrode’s MBA, got seduced by a new challenge and decided to join.
New shoes, backpacks, travelling plans and suddenly the preparation for the Summit turned out in a need beyond getting ready for the climb but to make a statement as a group, and making a difference.
One of the participants, Niels, was told one year and a half ago he suffered MS (Multiple Sclerosis). This disease attacks the myelin layer (the “isolation”) of the nerves, which should help controlling the muscles. If the 10 of us succeed in reaching the top, we are able to do more, so we have chosen to use our energies for fundraising for MS research: 50.000 Euros is our BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal). All donations will be channeled to this foundation that is helping Niels and other peers (1 in 1000 people in the Netherlands has MS) through research, education and care. Supporting their areas of investigation and contributing to help us reach our BHAG has the potential to achieve dramatic breakthroughs for MS.
Sponsoring – Making a difference
As there is still much unknown about MS, much research is needed in order to be able to cure and/ or prevent it. Additionally, MS is relatively unknown, resulting in the situation where patients are confronted with others not understanding their situation.
The foundation MS Research has as a goal to finance and stimulate scientific research on MS and to educate a broad target group on this condition. The foundation MS Research is completely dependent on contributions from the private sector www.msresearch.nl
Mission Summit supports research conducted at VU MS Centrum Amsterdam
The goal of this initiative is to raise a minimum of € 50.000,- as a contribution to MS Research. A specific research project on the agenda of MS Research has been chosen as a target project to be made possible with this contribution.
A problem in treating MS is that medication cannot reach the location of inflammation in the brain in a high dose. In the research that Mission Summit supports it is researched whether medication can reach the location of inflammation more efficiently by packaging the medication and steer the packaged medication by means of specific markers to the required location. Focus is also on the delivery of the specific medication. This research is conducted at the VU MS Centrum in Amsterdam www.vumc.nl
